Like the wind, my art is ever changing.
The mediums in which I work are as varied as this land I love. Since early childhood, I have chased a dream, a dream of a way of life, a dream of pursuing my art. Recently I have been working with wax and clay creating bronze sculptures. This is a very exciting medium to work in as anything is possible from miniature to life size and beyond.
As a young boy I spent endless classroom hours day dreaming of moving out west.
At night I kept the lights in our family's Iowa farm house burning as I painted scenes
from those day time dreams. My Great Grandmother's words "always follow your dreams son for they are given' to those who believe" took residence within my soul, echoing in my mind to this day. Always restless, easily bored, and rarely
satisfied, my yearnings fueled a fire within. A fire, which at 16, I could no longer
contain. Setting out on the first of many journeys west I began to chase my dreams.
Throughout the West to remote islands in southeast Alaska I've traveled and lived.
Wherever my travels took me, along with me went the art...that relentless drive within
to express my experiences visually. It matters not the medium I have available through
which to express myself, it is only the idea, the life that is expressed, that matters.
Wood, horn, stone, steel, paint, bronze and wax...these are but a few of the canvases
on which I've worked.
Content is as important to me in my work as the expression of art itself. Each piece of my art tells a story or symbolizes a belief or concept that I value. Of particular importance to me is the passing of a way of life, values which were the fabric of a healthy society seem to be disappearing with the passing of time. I still cling to those values.
In the past few years I have been working with fire and steel creating some unique artwork. Never satisfied with simplicity in my art I am always experimenting. What began as an idea to turn some of my drawings into silhouettes in steel, quickly developed
into using steel as a canvas on which to paint pictures with fire. I developed
an ability to gouge detailed lines into steel. Using this method my original silhouettes rapidly emerged into fine detailed works of art. Still not completely satisfied with the result I began painting my pieces; covering the steel canvas in realistic detail and watching my two-dimensional creations come to life.
I am proud of the fact that my art is held in private collections throughout the world .
Available in limited or open editions my Gallery pieces are painstakingly
created with the utmost attention to detail. Refusing to sacrifice quality for quantity
the number of pieces that I can produce in a year is limited and no two pieces are exactly alike.
The MW Roths Gallery Collection is truly unique.
