Nothing touches the soul quite like the call of a loon off in the distance.
While living in Alaska my wife and I did a lot of canoeing on small lakes. We had many chances to observe these beautiful birds in their natural surroundings. While watching a mother and baby one
day we witnessed something we felt to be very special. The baby had been riding up on her back for quite sometime, then the mother dove underwater. She was only under for just a few seconds and the
baby was in the water pretty excited. She stayed close by and let the baby do some swimming on it's own. After a little while she helped it back upon her back for some much needed rest.
When I got home I started in carving on this piece. The original I carved out of wood, every feather is very highly detailed. I then had it cast in resin which does capture every detail. I hand paint each
bird and then place them into a liquid resin on a oak base. The reeds are hand carved cedar that I steam for bending, they are also imbedded in the resin. I use air pressure to move the resin around
until it sets up to give it a rippled look, much like the scene that inspired the piece.
If you may be interested in this piece or any others just let me know and I can send you larger pictures and also some with more detail. To save on load time these images have to be reduced for the
web page.
