Thorne River Dollies

A resident of Alaska for 15 years, I spent many days fishing the rivers of Southeast. Thorne River, located on Prince of Wales Island, was a favorite location providing a
wonderful opportunity to enjoy the pristine beauty of Alaska.
The models for this exquisitely detailed wood carving were actual Dolly Varden caught in the Thorne River. They provided me with exact references enabling me to produce an accurate, life
size carving of these uniquely colored fish. Precise attention to detail was maintained in the creation of this piece. The fish and rocks were carved from bass wood and then painted with
14 transparent layers of air brush acrylic. The tree limb, past which each fish swims, was oven dried, painstakingly pruned for balance and artistic effect, and preserved with a sealer.
Sand was oven dried and applied to the base. Small gold nuggets were then sprinkled sparingly over the sand and the entire base was sealed.
This is truly an exquisite one of a kind piece created with such precise accuracy that it is more often than not mistaken for a taxidermied mount.
